Cooling Summer Yoga Pose

As summer approaches, practicing yoga indoors is a wonderful way to beat the heat.  Forward bends, which include poses such as Adho mukha virasana, or Child’s Pose help to calm and cool the nervous system.  Other benefits of practicing Child’s pose include relief of tension and pain in the lower back, as well as an increase in the mobility of the hips and shoulders.

To do Child’s Pose, kneel  on a padded surface, place your big toes together, take your knees as wide as your waist, then sit onto your heels.  Stretch your arms forward, hands shoulder-width apart, palms down, then rest your forehead on the floor.  If your head does not touch the floor with the arms straight, place a block/blanket between your head an the floor.  If you cannot sit onto your heels, place a folded blanket between your heels and hips.  Do this pose anytime you need to take a moment to turn inward and relax quietly.  Happy Practicing!
