5 Essential Ingredients for Any Cleanse or Detox Program

There’s no doubt that in the modern world, our bodies have to deal with high levels of toxicity.  From environmental toxins to food additives, the simple fact is that we’re living in a time where we come into contact with MORE chemicals and pollutants than EVER before.

With poor diets, high levels of stress, and lack of physical activity, our bodies can produce even more toxins and the process of eliminating toxicity can become sluggish.  This is when your body may send out warning signs – just like a warning light may turn on in your car to indicate that something is wrong.  Your own warning signs may include excess weight, headaches, aches and pains, skin conditions – like acne, rosacea, psoriasis – digestive problems, fatigue, moodiness, and your immune system can get bogged down so you may be more susceptible to allergies or colds and flues.  Over time, this sets up the perfect stage for disease to develop.

The good news is that our bodies are naturally equipped with the ability to detoxify and purify our systems from waste.  And, if we support our bodies to detoxify effectively, we can eliminate the overall toxic burden and the nagging symptoms that show up as warning signs.

I like to think about a cleanse and detoxification program like doing an oil change on your car.  Through normal wear and tear, your car’s oil gets dirty and so most people change the car’s oil regularly so that everything will run smoothly.  In fact, I find that many people take much better care of their cars than they do their own body!  So, I think of supporting your body to detoxify and cleanse as something we should do as regular maintenance for optimal health.

Here are five essential ingredients to cleanse and detoxify safely and successfully:

#1 – Get the JUNK out! By “junk”, I mean most everything that comes from a box or bag.  Heavily processed foods often include ingredients that are doing your body harm and adding toxins into your body.  Preservatives, artificial colors and flavors, added sugars/sweeteners, refined carbohydrates, damaged fats, and alcohol are some of the common offenders.  I also like to take this a step further and recommend removing foods that are common allergens that may cause you digestive trouble such as dairy, gluten, soy, eggs, and corn.

#2 – Better put the good stuff in! Start with your diet and add in good, wholesome foods.  Ideally, they’re single ingredient items – whole foods.  Some examples of whole foods are fresh fruits and veggies, lean proteins, whole grains, legumes or beans, nuts and seeds, as well as healthy fats like olive oil and flax seeds oil.  Some foods are especially beneficial:

  • Greens are especially beneficial to cleansing because they include potent antioxidants and chlorophyl that will cling to toxins and escort them out of your body.
  • Cruciferous veggies such as broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, and Brussels sprouts are high in sulfur-containing amino acids (which makes them stinky).  These amino acids are critical for your liver to fully do it’s job filtering the toxins.
  • Bitter herbs such as dandelion and milk thistle stimulates the liver and bile and are supportive to detoxification.

#3 – Boost elimination. Increasing fiber is a biggie.  Fiber is like the broom that sweeps through your digestive track to push all the toxins out when you go to the bathroom.  Increase fiber through your diet by eating lots of raw vegetables and fruits and then you might also want to add in a gentle fiber supplement.  You’ll also want to drink water throughout the day to hydrate and flush out your system.

#4 – Get proteins and amino acids. Your liver requires amino acids for detoxification.  So you’ll want to be sure to consume a vegan/vegetarian protein source such as beans, legumes, nuts, or seeds or clean, lean sources of animal protein such as meat, poultry, seafood.  But eating these foods is often not enough – you want to make sure your body is breaking down the protein fully so it can be absorbed well.  Chewing thoroughly and eating liquid meals like soups and smoothies can be helpful here.  You might also consider supporting your digestive process with enzymes and eliminate common allergens that can interfere with digestion.

#5 – Sweating and circulating. You want to make sure that your blood and lymph are circulating well and that you’re sweating to get those toxins out!  Exercise is a great way to do this.  Hot saunas (or Far Infared Saunas) are also helpful if you have access to one.  Massages, dry brushing your skin.  and hot baths are other great examples of ways you to help your body access the toxins that are stored deep in the fat.

And, lastly, an extra ingredient that will help you get the most out of any cleanse or detoxification program – SUPPORT.  This is key – whether you enlist a friend or partner OR get professional support and guidance to show you exactly how to support your body the right way AND encourage you to follow through like you never have before!
